Archival historyThe press cutting illustrated by the photo-image of the three of them in a 'trench' with a headings ‘The Man - The Girl' comes from 'The Voice of East London'.
The Voice of East London was a special newspaper style publication and only had two issues - those of January and June 1939 - selling at one penny (1d). It was produced by The East London Aid Spain Committee - a joint effort of the Stepney Trades Council and the Borough Labour Party – and used the motto "For Democracy, Against Fascism".
The newspaper cutting has been taken from the front page of issue one - January 1939 – though the headline itself is not included. The missing headline is "Heroes Both ..." appears above the photograph.
The lead articles in "The Voice" (as they called themselves) were: "Their Fight is Ours!" by Clement Atlee and, on behalf of the Trades Council, "We are Ready to Help" by Stafford Cripps" appear under photographs of Mobile Surgical Vans being made ready to leave for Spain and alongside a photograph of Spanish children with a caption "Food Will Win the War". As well as the war in Spain other articles deal with issues such as housing, trade unionism and the Sino-Chinese war. Much of the paper is taken up with 'Spain Week' - a campaign to raise "1,000,000 pennies" for a foodship - which included the Whitechapel Exhibition of Spanish Art in which 'Guernica' appeared. Both copies of The Voice of East London are available at the British Library
