Archival historyAdministrative history: The Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Tailors was formed in 1868 from an amalgamation between the Manchester Society of Tailors and the London Operative Tailors Protective Association and several other unions. In 1894 it changed its name to the Amalgamated Society of Tailors. In 1900 a female section was set up and the union changed its name to the Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses. In 1932 it merged with the Tailors and Garment Workers Union to form the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers.
