Archival historyAdministrative history: In 1862 the General Union of Tin-plate Workers was formed. In 1892 it changed its name to the General Union of Braziers and Sheet Metal Workers and in 1920 it merged to form the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers and Braziers. In 1959 this merged with the National Society of Coppersmiths, Braziers and Metal Workers to form the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers and Coppersmiths. In 1967 this merged with the Heating and Domestic Engineering Union to form the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers, Coppersmiths, Heating and Domestic Engineers.
In 1908 the National Union of Operative Heating and Domestic Engineers, Whitesmiths and General Iron Workers was formed. This changed to the National union of Operative Heating and Domestic Engineers and General Iron Workers in 1948. In 1956 this became the Heating and Domestic Engineers Union.
