TitleJug - Iron Bridge over the River Wear
    ReferenceCERAMIC/011
Scope and ContentJug depicting view of the Iron Bridge over the Wear and the HMS Northumberland 74 - This commemorative jug was made by Dixon and Co. at the Garrison Pottery in Sunderland about 1820. It is splash lustre ware with transfers. The jug shows the then largest cast iron single span bridge in the world, designed by Thomas Paine and opened on 9 Aug 1796 under the patronage of Rowland Burdon MP. The span was 263 feet with 214 tons of cast iron and 46 tons of wrought iron. There is a verse with square and compasses suggesting freemasonry involvement. There is also a ship of the line called HMS Northumberland 74, meaning it carried 74 cannon.
