Scope and ContentEngraving by Charles Jameson Grant subtitled: This being reaping time, John Bull has more live stock on his farm than he is willing to provide for. The Golden sheaves have numerous claimants. Vick and her German Saw-Sage take the lead, laden with plenty which they claim as their own. The Church comes after, arms full, and top-heavy, and crop well-crammed with the delicious produce, for the bounty of which the prayer-book, and not the farmer, gets all the credit. After Church comes Law, with monstrous hook in hand, and aquiline hook on nose, squeezing itself into sharpness by the very load of plunder. Then comes Place, keen and selfish, afraid to go lest it should leave some gleanings behind it for the poor to pick up - Pension afterwards, rapacious and insatiable Excise and Civil List, Law and Monopoly are all busily engaged each for himself; regardless of John Bull's rights, and eager only to exaggerate their own. Mother Brougham, in the distance, has a HEAD load of plunder, to which she maintains a TITLE, and the Squirearchy have employed horse and van to satisfy their rapacitywith the plunder of John's Farm. In the foreground is John himself, upbraiding Melbourne and Russell for their insolence and villany. To which Melbourne replies by showing a Whitehall order (not a Post-office one) in justification of his conduct. Russell tips his nose at John, bullies him with Court slang and Political jaw
