The CIO was born in 1953 because millions of factory workers needed protection but the craft unions wanted them divided among many different unions. These eight leaders of the CIO unions succeeded in rally support from over four million workers in just two years. Under the dynamic leadership of John L Lewis they rallied to bring the benefits of organization to millions of mass production workers under the banner of the Congress of Industrial Organizations
