Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: The seamen's fight. The Seamen's Union became a reality only after years of struggle by men like Andrew Furuseth who finally succeeded in organizing the International Seamen's Union. He spoke out strongly at every opportunity despite threats of jail and black list. In 1915, spurred to action by Senator Robert M LaFollette, Congress passed the Seamen's Act ripping away the bonds which had made the seamen virtually slaves aboard ship.
