Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: Women at work. In 1833 women workers organized a 'Female Society' when the shoe manufacturers in Lynn, Massachusetts tried cutting their wages. During the Civil War and World Wars I and II they worked in the munitions plants. Mother Jones, union organiser (shown in the lower right corner), helped in the bitter strike against the Rockefeller interests at Ludlow, Colorado, in 1914. The strike was lost when the troops burned the strikers' tents, killing many women and children
