Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: Birth of the AFL. The American Federation of Labor, organized by the leaders of the craft unions, had its origin in 1881. Samuel Gompers, shown here when he was a reader for the cigar makers, became its first president and served until his death in 1923. PJ McGuire of the Carpenters, one of the early AFL leaders, organized the first Labor Day celebration in New York City in 1882
