Federal aid made higher education possible for children of farmers and workers with the passage of the Morrill Act of 1862. The nation realized the need for the 'liberal and practical education of the industrial classes.' The lower left-hand scene shows William H Sylvis who devoted his entire adult life helping the iron moulders to form their union. "I love this union cause," he said, "more dearly than life itself."
