The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln resulted in a new birth of freedom, but it came while the nation from north to south was devastated by civil war. Lincoln believed that "labor is the superior of capital and deserves much higher consideration," but did not live to see that his high ideals were carried out.
