Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: Slave labor. Slave labor was cheap labor, especially on the plantations. Men, women and children were brought from Africa by the boat load and sold at auction to the plantation owners of the south. John Brown was hanged in 1859 as a result of his unsuccessful attempt to stat a general revolt of these slaves. The underground railroad helped thousands escape north and into Canada.
