Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: One of the first strikes. The Corwainers are guilty ... yes, said the court. The boot and shoemakers of Philadelphia were found guilty of conspiring (or organizing) to raise their wages. Between 1806-1842 six such convictions were made by courts in the major cities of the United States, all based on criminal 'conspiracy' under the English common law. Not until 1842 did a courageous judge reverse these precedents.
