Scope and ContentPoster with an image of a watercolour by John Gelsavage and the text: Early social conditions. In 1831 nearly 2/3 of the workers in the cotton mills were women and children (7% were children under 12). Pauper schools were the only source of education for workers' children. Imprisonment for debts was such a common experience that 18 people wer imprisoned in Massachusetts for debts totaling slightly over $150.
