Scope and ContentJK Gardner talks about the firm L Gardner of Patricroft. He recalls starting with the firm, his family connection, products (auto engines) the paternalism of the firm, the women workers etc. JK Gardner describes to Ruth Frow, how from an early age, the Gardner children went around the Gardner factory, then when they grew up, some but not all, went to work there. He describes how Gardners has changed over the years, from employing six hundred to nearly three thousand. He talks about how he envisages diesel becoming more common in saloon cars. He said that Britain does not produce a diesel car apart from the Austin taxi. Gardners produced diesel engines for large trucks, buses, boats and submarines. Ruth asks him if and how the family influence has decreased with the increase of the firm's size. The discussion moves across many topics - female staff, apprenticeships etc.
