Scope and ContentPoster with images of doves and the text: City of Manchester. Nuclear free zone. By resolution of the City Council on November 5th 1980, Manchester became Britain's first Nuclear Free Zone. That same resolution inspired the formation fo the National Conference of Nuclear Free Zone Authorities. In its historic resolution, the City Council recognised that the possession of nuclear weapons would not protect the people of this country against the horrors of nuclear war and that civil defence against nuclear attack was a sham. It successfully called on local authorities to oppose such misleading civil defence preparations and to make their opposition widely known.
