TitleDiscussion about Gabriel Cohen
ReferenceTAPE/247/1
Date
n.d.
Scope and ContentThis is rather a mixed-up tape. Sides A and B should really reversed, as Side A follows on from Side B.
Side B starts with general discussion (Ruth, Eddie, and Jim Parry (?)) about the Daily Worker, how it was banned for a while during the first part of WW2, and then how it was distributed (often by motorbike). There is some talk about fire-watching duties during WW2, and discussion of various personalties. See record TAPE/247B for more details on this.
This is followed by a discussion about Gabriel Cohen, with Ruth and Eddie Frow, and Flora Dexter, Gabriel Cohen's daughter (Gabriel Cohen adopted the name of Ted Dexter in Moscow), and two others (one of them may have been Fanny Morgan). This discussion is continued on Side A of the tape.
Gabriel Cohen went to Moscow in about 1932, and Flora was born there in 1934, and grew up there. In 1979 (?), when the tape was made, she was trying to find out about her parents before they went to Moscow, and in turn, she talked about her family in Moscow. There is a Word document which gives a few more details.
There is a record about Gabriel Cohen in the WCML filing cabinet. There are also some of his papers at WCML (reference ORG/LENINSCH).
The discussion starts on Side B and continues on Side A, and is followed by the Messiah, performed by the Yew Tree Choir.
