Scope and Content40th Anniversary of the Welfare State mug. Front - Illustration of Attlee celebrating election victory. Text - 'In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the foundation of the Welfare State'. Back text - 'The 1945 election proved the most dramatic in British political history. Labour, who in the last election in 1935 had only 157 MPs, received nearly 12 million votes. And with 393 MPs Labour had, for the first time, a clear majority over all other parties. The mood in the House was exciting: two-thirds of the Party had never been in Parliament before and many were youngish, middle-class professional people. This made the PLP more fully representative than ever before of all classes, occupations and ages in British society. The stage was set for a radical Labour Government to guide the nation towards Socialism.'
