Scope and ContentMargaret Bondfield archive, edited. This tape contains several pieces from radio programmes, with Margaret talking about aspects of her life and work. The first piece describes the ceremony of being sworn as a new Privy Councillor, and the fact that the she was the first woman to have held such a position makes this particularly interesting. The second piece describes her early life - her family, her views on religion, the jobs she had and how she became a committed trade unionist. The third piece describes in greater depth why she believes trade unions are so important, and also some achievements of the Ministry of Labour while she was in office. The fourth, fairly short piece again refers to the 1929 election and its aftermath. There is a Word document which gives a more detailed summary of the tape. (There is a copy of Margaret Bondfield's autobiography, "A Life's Work" at the W.C.M.L. - click on Documentation)
