Scope and ContentInterview with Joe Cowley parts 1 and 2 (continued on tape 302). Joe was born in 1907 in the East End of London. He left school at 14, and became an apprentice at an engineering firm. At 18 he started work as a stevedore (like his father). He describes the procedure for getting work in the docks before WW2, the hard times of the Thirties, including the suicide of one of his friends. During the war he worked in the docks at Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow. He talks about various strikes and disputes. There is a Word document which gives a more detailed summary of the tape.
