Scope and ContentNotes for a book "Spearheads for reform - the socialist settlements and the progressive movement 1890 - 1914", by Allyn F Davies, a book which could not be found in the WCML catalogue.
The following is a summary found in a ring binder written by an unidentified author..There is nothing on the second side of the tape.
1892 America’s first concerted attack on urban poverty “Settlement Houses” – centres of help for urban poor – school nursery, centre of information
Through the settlement houses, the urban poor became aware that poverty was related to education, housing. Settlement houses were influenced by Christian evangelism – Arnold Toynbee, Octavia Hill, William Morris, Samuel Barnett, when they transferred to England from America? Some settlements were sectarian in their attitude to whom they helped - mainly Anglican? The settlement programme seems to have been denominational in England, i.e. Methodist, Congregational, C of E, Catholic – this appears less so in America. Also the speaker states that settlement programmes dealt mainly with the poor and working class as opposed to the abject poor.
Education appears to have played a significant role in the settlement influence on the poor. The settlement programme in America tried to keep the Blacks out, in case it would put the white poor off attending. The settlements appear to have played a role within organised labour reforms in the United States.
