Scope and ContentThis tape contains a discussion amongst Sam Wild, Eddie and Ruth Frow, as part of the Frows' research for a book about the International Brigade. It starts with Sam discussing his homecoming from Spain. He states that on returning from Spain the Veterans started two campaigns - Dependents' Aid Committee (for sending food etc to Spain) and Arms for Spain. Sam says that some industrialists tried to help the Veterans returning from Spain by giving them jobs. Sam himself got a job at Mather and Platt. Sam was arrested at Blackburn when he tried to approach the Prime Minister in order to hand him a protest / petition, but the case was dismissed on appeal. Sam was active on the People's Convention Campaign. Sam recalled that the Communist Party called for a march on the first May Day which was held (mid week) during the War. The march went from Ardwick Green to Debdale Park, Gorton. Sam got arrested on the march and could not get a solicitor to represent him, because he was a Communist. He was fined a pound. Sam was the first convenor of the Shell Carrington site (petro-chem). He also worked on the Barton (Motorway) Bridge. Eddie mentioned that six men died whilst building the bridge. Sir Matt Busby and the Lord Mayor organised collections at football matches for the dependents.
