Scope and ContentMary Higgins was born in 1914 in Failsworth. Her father and mother were secularists. At the age of 11 she joined the Labour Party, and at 14 was the ward secretary. She set up Failsworth Labour League of Youth. In 1939 she joined the Communist Party. In 1940 she married the young man who had set up the Mossley Labour League of Youth. Together they started the Red Falcons in Mossley Labour Party, for younger children. She was secretary of Manchester Communist Party during World War Two. She was active in the National Women's Assembly, Women against War, the Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament and the National Women's Caravan for Peace.
