He talks about his early life in Cleator Moor, Cumberland - his family, education, the difficult times during the 1930s, then going to Leeds University, his growing interest in politics (Spanish Civil War, threat of Hitler etc), his experiences in the RAF (he was discharged quite early on because of injuring himself whilst undergoing training), his wartime engineering and scientific work in Slough. During this time he joined the Communist Party and became very active in this and in the AScW Union. Married in 1944. After losing his job in Slough they moved to Ilford - more CP and union work. Became a full-time CP organiser in 1950. Various election campaigns, including 1945, 1950 and 1951 general election campaigns.
