Scope and ContentOlive was born in London in 1935, but moved to Bradford at the age of 18 months. Her father was a member of the unemployed workers movement, and went on hunger marches. Her mother was in the Independent Labour Party, and in 1927 joined the Communist Party. Her mother was arrested for chalking slogans, when Olive was the lookout. Olive had childhood memories of political meetings. She joined the Young Communists, and was in the fight to end conscription, and was active in the tenants' association.
