Scope and ContentBorn in Blackburn in 1897, mother died when 2, abandoned by father, at 9 went to Darwen to live with aunt, then adopted by Mr and Mrs Naylor. At 12 worked in mill as reacher for drawing, then looms (weaving) at 14. Night school. Army 1915 (in army 3 yrs, 3 mths). Married Nellie in 1919. Back to mill. Recalls meeting Gandhi (1930). Strike 1934, involvement with union (Darwen Weavers Association), studied with Workers Educational Association, union collector from 1924, treasurer 1928, full time union job 1933, union branch secretary, Haslingden, 1942, other positions in union, joined Labour Party (member 50 years), Darwen Labour councillor 1936-1942, retired 1975.
