Scope and ContentReadings from Clarion 1892 and 1893.
Side 1- The tape starts with a fictional account of two men going to the new Cumberland Commune. They are talking to a third person and relating their story: one of the travellers comes from a family of six in Kentish Town, London, which had to make do with one room: one baby died of scarlet fever: one of the travellers relates tales from Socialist conflicts, he relates a free speech march, and a disturbance at the Carlton Club.
Our two travellers relate a hard time they encountered in London, the third person questions them about their Socialist ideals, and asks, are not all Socialists waging war against respectable society?
The three participants exchange anecdotes about life in London for the unemployed.
The tape then becomes inaudible.
April 30th 1893 (?) "London Chronicle" - unemployed colliery used for "Home Colonisation Scheme", six miles from Kendal. The "London Chronicle" estimates that 50-60 will be employed upon the "Home Colonisation Scheme" - this is a factual item connected to the first (fictional) story.
Side 2 - The tape starts with a list of advertisements from the "Clarion" dealing with political meetings upcoming - this chronology of events continues to the end of the tape, also mentioned are incidental anecdotes.
There is a more detailed synopsis of the tape's contents in a Word document.
