Scope and ContentTalk by W.P.Watkins (Will Watkins) on the principles and future of co-operation (AGITCOOP July 1986).
Louise Dennis introduces WP Watkins, who had been described as a legend in his own life-time. He was born in 1893, into a staunchly co-operative family. His father worked in the Plymouth Ship Yard, and became President of the Plymouth Co-operative Society, and then in 1910 the President of the British Co-operative Congress. Will studied the subject of co-operation, firstly through correspondence courses, and then in 1020 at the Co-operative College which was based in Manchester, as one of the first full-time students there. Later on he became a tutor at the College. In 1929 he joined the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), and remained there for ten years. In 1951 he became Director of the International Co-operative Movement, a post he held until 1963. In 1963 he formally retired, but since then he had been busy as consultant, teacher, guide and writer. In 1986 he published a book of reflections about his life and experience in the Co-operative Movement, entitled "Co-operative Principles Today and Tomorrow". In July 1986, six weeks after publication, he spoke to the 15th Annual Conference of the ICA Advisory Group for International Training of Co-operators (AGITCOOP).
After this introduction the rest of the tape contains his lecture and the following discussion.
