ReferenceFRAMED/065
Date
7 Jan 1833
Production date 1833-01-07 - 1833-01-07
Scope and ContentThe image is divided into two panels. In the right-hand panel are (left to right) Durham, Grey and Brougham and a speech bubble coming from Grey's mouth saying "I say Harry I think it would be prudent not to Open it just yet, only hark at their Revolutionary cries and threats -- it's quite alarming. I'm positively afraid to open it at all. What a Mob of Distructives!!!". These three men are the Parliamentary leaders of the passing of the Reform Act 1832 and from the safety of the inside of the Houses of Parliament they are reflecting upon the outcome of the election held under the terms of the Act.
In the left-hand panel there is a queue of men all wearing hats waiting to enter Parliament. They are (left to right) Daniel O'Connell with shillelagh, Henry Hunt wearing a white hat, James Cully (weaver, involved in November 1830 Carlisle riots and demonstrations), William Cobbett, Joseph Hume, and John Key (1794-1858, Sheriff for London and Middlesex 1824, became Alderman and later Lord Mayor for 1830 and 1831, served as MP 1832-1833). These are among the men who led the agitation for reform. Behind them in the anonymous crowd is the mob carrying the flag of freedom surmounted by a Cap of Liberty; they are pressing for greater reform, hence Grey's anxiety.
